Pet Insurance

Why Pet Insurance Is Important

Let’s face it, in this day and age our furry friends aren’t just pets, they are part of the family! As members of our family we would go to the ends of the Earth to give them a life full of love, great treats, chasing squirrels and whatever else their goofy little hearts desire. And when things go badly and illness or injury happens, we want them to get the best medical care possible. But, with all the new procedures and advanced treatments available for pet illnesses come greater cost.

Add to the cost that it is estimated your pet has a 33% chance of becoming injured or ill each year and a 92% chance they will need veterinary medical care at least once in their lifetime and the value of being prepared for this becomes clear.

That’s why Pet Insurance came to be – as veterinary medicine advances so does its cost. Pet Insurance can significantly reduce the cost of medical care for our furry family members and help reduce the stress of decision making when a major medical need arises.

Boulder’s Natural Animal Hospital invites EVERY pet parent to consider Pet Insurance so their pet always has access to the care they may need.

But there are so many Pet Insurance companies!! How do we know which is the best one for our pets??

First, Understand the Differences in Pet Insurance Plans

Most Pet Insurance Plans, regardless of company, have a few basics in common:

  • You usually pay a monthly premium
  • You select an annual or “per-incident” deductible amount
  • You can go to any veterinarian you choose
  • You typically pay your vet first, file a claim and get reimbursed
  • Pre-existing conditions and related treatments are not covered

However, there are also some substantial differences between Pet Insurance Companies. These differences often impact if your claim is covered or how much you get reimbursed after a veterinary visit. Some of the most important differences to be aware of are:

  • Whether congenital and hereditary conditions (such as hip dysplasia, heart defects, eye cataracts or diabetes) are covered
  • How the reimbursement is calculated (Based on actual vet bill? Based on a schedule? Based on “customary rates”?)
  • Whether there are limits or caps applied to your reimbursement (Per incident limit? Per year limit? Lifetime limit?)
  • Whether there is an annual contract – these can be used to determine that anything diagnosed in the previous year of coverage is now considered “pre-existing” the next year
  • Whether their customers are happy with the company’s customer care and claims experience

How Do I Choose a Plan/Company?

Unlike in the human medical insurance world there are not “Pet Insurance Agents” you can go to that can help guide you to the best plan for you and your pet. It’s therefore up to you to compare pet insurance companies, see the latest customer reviews, and get a free quote to help you determine the best fit.
