Your Pet’s View of a Surgery Day at BNA
This morning started like every other day – I woke up excited to play with my family! My parents came to the kitchen but for some reason they didn’t feed me. They told me it was a very special day so I didn’t mind that I had to skip breakfast for it – especially since we got to get in the car and come see my favorite people at Boulder’s Natural Animal!
We got to the hospital and I couldn’t wait to see my favorite doctor. Today was a little different though – instead of going into an exam room my family gave me a big hug and said goodbye. At first I was nervous but the technician who took me to the back of the hospital was so nice it made it all better.
When I got to the back of the hospital I found my favorite doctor. She told me that the bloodwork my parents brought me in for the day before looked spectacular – I don’t know what that means but it made me wag my tail! My doctor then started looking in my eyes and rubbing my belly. She held up something called a stethoscope to my chest and told me my lungs and heart sounded really healthy. When she was done she said something to the technician. Then the technician came over with something that looked like a pen and poked my skin with it. It kind of felt like a bug bite at first but my doctor said it would make me sleepy and prevent things from hurting so I didn’t mind. Sure enough, about 20 minutes later I felt really happy and a little sleepy.
Once I started feeling sleepy the nice technician shaved a little hair off my leg, scrubbed it with something wet and cool and then put a funny looking tube called an IV catheter in my arm. She was so gentle it didn’t even hurt! I don’t know what an IV catheter is but since it didn’t hurt I didn’t mind having one. After the tube in my arm got tape on it they stuck a pen in the tube and told me to think of chasing squirrels and eating doggy treats….and before I could even think of what kind of treat I’d want most I fell asleep.
When I woke up I was laying on warm blankets and my friend the technician was petting me. I was kind of sleepy and she told me that my surgery went well. I don’t know what surgery is but it made me happy that she was petting me. She asked me if anything hurt but nothing did. My favorite doctor came in to check on me and I was really happy to see her.
After a while the technician took the tube out of my arm and put a bandaid on it. They gave me a really yummy snack and we went for a walk outside. When we came back inside they put something on my head they called an e-collar. I think it’s a silly hat but I didn’t mind it since they said if I wore it I could get back to running around sooner.
Before I knew it my parents came back to pick me up. I was so excited to tell them about my day! My favorite doctor gave my parents a sheet of paper that I think had a story about what I did on my Big Day and what I can do afterwards. She also gave them a bottle of something called pills – I don’t know what pills are but everytime I get one I get a treat too so they are OK by me!
I said goodbye to all my friends and got in my car. On the way home I thought about the squirrels I was gonna chase after I got my silly hat off. I also thought about my Big Day and you know what? It wasn’t so bad at all! I can’t wait to see my favorite people at Boulder’s Natural Animal again!
